Games they teach in our schools

Apeejay School

Where: BG Block

Games taught: Cricket, football, volleyball, carrom and chess. Badminton has been started from 2012. Yoga is compulsory for Classes VI to X and mini-tennis has been introduced for those up to Class V. This is indoor tennis that takes place in the school’s assembly hall. Students are taken to Salt Lake Swimming Pool in BF Block once a week and they also have a chess club in the school.

Sports calendar: The school has inter-house competitions for all the events that are taught and a grand sports day in winter. Thrice a week the school’s sports club teaches students games after school.

Is the school’s infrastructure such that a student can take part in the Olympics some day? No. They would need separate training.

Salt Lake Point School

Where: CD Block

Games taught: Cricket, football, volleyball, throwball, badminton, yoga. Karate is compulsory for students up to Class V.

Sports calendar: Inter-house cricket and football tournaments and annual sports day.

Is the school’s infrastructure such that a graduating student can represent Olympics someday? No.

Salt Lake School

Where: CA Block

Sports calendar: Sports Day. But inter-house events stopped after 2011.

Is the school’s infrastructure such that a student can go on to take part in Olympics? No. There is no full-time sports teacher now.

St. Francis Xavier School

Where: Purbachal

Games taught: Basketball, football, cricket, badminton and carrom. Karate is compulsory for Classes IV to IX and yoga for Classes I to V.

Sports calendar: Sports Day is held at the Sports Authority of India grounds every alternate year and inter-house tournaments take place every now and then. A chess tournament is on right now. The school’s annual fest hosts sporting events like rifle shooting, bowling and pool. These are played at Space Circle.

Is the school’s infrastructure such that a student can take part in the Olympics some day? No. They do not have a field. But they have a quality table tennis player.

Bidhannagar Municipal School

Where: FE Block

Games taught: Athletics, football, cricket, kabadi, yoga and gymnastics.

Sports calendar: A sports day every January in FE Park. Also inter-house and inter-class events in the games that are taught.

Labanhrad Vidyapith

Where: AD Block

Games taught: Athletics, yoga, football and cricket.

Sports calendar: Annual sports day and inter-class competitions.

Mother International School

Where: CL Block

Games taught: Sprint, football, cricket, basketball. As the school is under CBSE, sports are a part of the curriculum.

Sports calendar: Annual sports day in December at the CK-CL Park.

Queen of the Missions School

Where: HB Block

Games taught: Sprint, kabadi, football, basketball, badminton, khokho, yoga

Sports calendar: Sports day in December every alternate year in HB Park.

Is the school’s infrastructure such that a student can take part in the Olympics some day? No. The school has a good basketball court but no specialist basketball coach.

Sri Aurobindo Institute of Education

Where: CL Block

Games taught: Football, athletics, shot put, yoga

Sports calendar: Annual sports day, inter-house badminton, football and athletic competitions

Kendriya Vidyalaya 1

Where: EB Block

Games taught: Basketball, volleyball, kabadi, khokho, cricket, football

Sports calendar: Annual sports day. Also inter-house badminton, volleyball, kabadi, khokho, cricket, chess tournaments.

Is the school’s infrastructure such that a student can take part in the Olympics some day? No. The school does not have a good football ground. But it has some promising individual talents.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan

Where: FA Block

Games taught: Football, cricket, basketball, yoga, khokho, kabadi, throwball, volleyball, karate, table tennis, baseball, table tennis.

Sports calendar: Annual sports day. Also inter-house football, table tennis, basketball, khokho, chess competitions.

Is the school’s infrastructure such that a student can take part in the Olympics some day? No. But the school is a power-house in basketball with strong represen-tations in both boys and girls district teams.

Delhi Public School Newtown

Where: Action Area 1, New Town

Games taught: Football, athletics, cricket, basketball, tennis, swimming, volleyball, throwball, table tennis, squash, badminton, chess, karate, roller skating. Swimming is compulsory with a special period every week.

Sports calendar: Annual sports day. Also inter-house football, table tennis, cricket and aquatic meets.

Is the school’s infrastructure such that a student can take part in the Olympics some day? Yes. It is the only school in the area with a swimming pool. The school has 12 sports teachers.

Hariyana Vidya Mandir

Where: BA Block

Games taught: Football, basketball, table tennis, cricket, throwball, badminton, khokho, kabadi.

Sports calendar: Annual sports day. Also inter-house football, cricket, table tennis, basketball and throwball (girls) meets.

Is the school’s infrastructure such that a student can take part in the Olympics some day? No. But a Class XII student was in the top two in 800m and 1,500m races in the 2012 Bidhannagar sub-division sports meet.

Bidhannagar Govt. High School

Where: BD Block

Games taught: Athletics, basketball, badminton, gymnastics.

Is the school’s infrastructure such that a student can take part in the Olympics some day? No. The school has lost its playground with half of BD Park occupied by stalls for a market that never got shifted. Lack of government funds has held up construction of the basketball court. It used to be the east zone centre for SAI till 1994.
