Vaishali makes it seven in a row

Tamil Nadu’s R. Vaishali won her seventh game on the trot on Friday to move up to the top of the table and open up a lead of 1.5 points from her nearest competitor at the Everest26th National U-11 Chess Championship at Sakchi’s Agrasen Bhavan.

Vaishali, who took merely 27 moves to kill the challenge of Odisha’s Bidar Rurumbara finished pretty on 7.5 points after seven rounds to lead in the girl’s category. The quartet of Tarini Goyal (Chandigarh) Harshita Guddanti, Potluri Supreetha (both Andhra Pradesh) and Sweta Senapati (Odisha) finished tied for the second spot with 6 points each.

While Tarini had to settle for a draw against Harshita, Supreetha beat state-mate V. Toshali to move into the second spot. Sweta joined them there with a win against Bengal’s Khushi Dharewa.

In the boy’s category, Odisha continued its reign on the top of the table after Round 7 with Rakesh Kumar Jena drawing his match against Mitrabha Guha (Bengal).

Bengal’s Mitrabha, who held the edge for the major part of the game, however, failed to go for jugular and ultimately was forced to sign truce with Rakesh after 47 moves.

Siva Mahadevan of Tamil Nadu managed to pull off a surprise win against his top seeded state-mate V.S. Rathanvel to join Rakesh at the top with 6.5 points. Mitrabha trails the leaders by half a point in the second spot.
