| The MCKV team participating in SUPRA SAEINDIA 2011 |
Forget Grand Prix and F1, students of the MCKV Institute of Engineering, Liluah, are all set to rev up and get set, go on the fast lane, that too in their self-manufactured racing car!
Falcon Racing, a team of 24 undergrads currently headed by fourth-year students, Madhusudan Kabra (captain) and Avishek Kar (vice captain), will unveil and showcase their own mean machine, Gavin, on Sunday.
Designed over the past year, the destination of their hot wheels is SUPRA SAEINDIA 2012, where the MCKV boys will pit themselves against 65 racing teams from colleges across the country, between September 6 and 9.
Gavin, by Hero Falcon Racing, in association with The Telegraph, will be on display between August 12 and 15 at Avani Riverside Mall. The car is a single-seater with an open cockpit. It has a bell-crank suspension, a custom designed shock absorber and a Maruti 800cc BS3 engine, which can reach maximum speed of 130-140 kmph. Adding to the speed thrills will be racing video games, quizzes on racing and other activities conducted by the college to drum up interest in and support for the team.
SUPRA SAEINDIA 2012 is a student motor sports competition held annually following the model of competitions in Germany, Japan and the US. It will be held at the Buddh International Circuit race track in Greater Noida, much to the excitement of the students.
“The idea of our car racing on the same track where cars driven by Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher did burn-outs is enough to drive anyone crazy,” gushed Sushovan Mukhopadhyay and Souro Poddar, second-year students who are part of the Falcon team. Manning the wheels this year will be Arpan Gupta, also one of the designing heads, backed by Anish Agarwal, the manufacturing head. Their job will be to try and better their own performance, after Team Falcon made it to the top 14 last year.
