P. Iniyan of Tamil Nadu pulled off an upset win against top seed V.S. Rathanvel on Wednesday to finish as joint leaders on the points table at the end of Round IV of the Everest 26th National Under-11 Boy’s and Girl’s Chess Championship. The meet is underway at Agrasen Bhavan in Jamshedpur.
Iniyan, with four points, is level with Odisha’s Rakesh Kumar Jena at the top of the table in the boy’s category. A bunch of 10 contestants — Harshit Raja, P. Atharvaa (both Maharashtra), Hirthickkesh Prasad, Siva Mahadevan (both Tamil Nadu), K.S. Raghunandan (Karnataka), Mitrabha Guha, Neelash Saha (both Bengal), Sankalp Baliar Singh, Samal Ansuman (both Odisha) and Rajaryan Kuvelkar (Goa) — are tied second at 3.5 points each.
Tamil Nadu finished on top in the girl’s category as well with R. Vaishali sharing the first spot with Andhra Pradesh’s Harshita Guddanti. Both the players finished on four points each in the girl’s category, with Khushi Dharewa (Bengal), Potluri Supreetha (Andhra Pradesh) and Vantika Agarwal (Delhi) tailing them with 3.5 points each.
Players from the state, however, cut a sorry figure at the end of the fourth round with Bidisha Roy, Pracheta Agarwal and Asfia Shiraz finishing having managed two points each in the eve’s category. Anannya Dash has managed only 0.5 point so far from four rounds.
The boys fared no better with the state duo of Anshul Nigam and Vatsal Singhania too having managd to put just two points each in their kitty. Abhishek Roy lagged behind at 1.5 point with Arin Agarwal, Kumar Utkarsh and Archit Mukherjee trailing him with one point each.
The event, being held under the banner of the All Jharkhand Chess Association, consists 11 rounds, all of which will be played in the Swiss format.
