Meghalaya to crown Youth Icon

Shillong, Aug. 7: Meghalaya’s first Youth Icon of the Year will be held next month.

Shillong-based Avenues, a finishing and communication skills academy, will be hosting the award function to crown the youth icon of the year and honour other icons who have excelled in their fields.

The event is the group’s flagship inaugural function marking the start of the academy’s 10th year in operation.

Avenues had launched the campaign to discover the state’s first Youth Icon of the Year, encouraging participation in the voting process from youths, young adults and concerned citizens. The award will be decided through votes via SMS in two phases and presented during the Youth Icon Awards ceremony.

Phase I, launched on the July 29, requires interested voters to send in up to five votes from a single number for their Icon of the Year to 58585.

Users are required to send in their nominations in the format “SH ICON Icon Name” by August 15.

Phase II of the campaign will feature the names of the top five youth icons voted for in Phase I, and will allow fans the opportunity to cast a single vote through SMS, for the Youth Icon of the Year award.

“The event celebrates the spirit of resilience, courage and tenacity. Our awards are a genuine attempt at recognising and acknowledging the work and achievements of Meghalaya’s lesser-known heroes and icons for youth,” Mark Stone Laitflang, Group Avenues MD, said.

The other awards will be presented to achievers in the fields of entrepreneurship, social work, education, visual arts, law, media, citizen journalism, creative and performing arts, tradition and culture, tourism, sport and conservation. ·
