Man held for death of minor maid

Aug. 7: Police today arrested a 40-year-old man from Kharguli following the death of a minor girl yesterday and allegations by her parents that she was murdered.

The police said Bobita Orang, 15, from Khetri on the city’s outskirts, worked as a domestic help in the house of Bindeswar Bora in Kharghuli for more than a year and she died yesterday under mysterious circumstances.

Bora said the girl had committed suicide by hanging herself but her mother, Meghali Orang, lodged a complaint with Khetri police alleging that she was raped and murdered.

The death sparked protest at Khetri and a mob even blocked the highway for over five hours demanding action against those responsible for the girl’s death.

Following the outcry, Khetri police transferred the case to Latasil police station as the incident took place in its jurisdiction. Latasil police registered a case (203/2012) under sections 376 and 302 IPC and took Bora into custody.

“We arrested Bora following contradictory statements made by him on the cause of the girl’s death. We have started a probe into the incident. We have sent the body for post-mortem. Based on the autopsy report, we will take steps,” a source at Latasil police station said.

The All Adivasi Students Association of Assam has demanded a proper investigation to ascertain the cause of Bobita’s death and punishment to those responsible for her death. “We demand a high-level inquiry into the incident as we suspect that the girl was tortured and murdered,” the president of the association’s central executive committee, Raphael Kujur, said.

The union also decided to move the Assam Human Rights Commission seeking an inquiry into the incident.
