Shillong, Aug. 7: The anti-corruption wing of the ANVC (B), which is the breakaway faction of the A’chik National Volunteer Council (ANVC), has asked the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) chief executive member Purno K. Sangma to step down immediately.
“With due respect we have considered your position and given you ample time to improve the role of the GHADC in checking influx, illegal traders and other corrupt practices in all the areas under council. However, thanks to you for doing nothing, and taking us for a ride and making us believe that you would work to improve GHADC,” Nawang Sangma, chief of the anti-corruption wing said in a letter. He said the group had been observing the GHADC chief “closely”.
“We have given you enough time, as you have asked for, but you have failed miserably to even understand our genuine aspiration to improve the district council, which is our pride,” Nawang Sangma said.
The ANVC (B) leader levelled corruption charges against the GHADC chief, saying Purno Sangma had taken bribes from various bidders for council gates.
“According to the council norms, you were supposed to approve the highest bidders so that the funds flowed to the treasury, but you filled your own account and settled for lesser amount, depriving the council. This is stealing. You overruled the decision of the concerned executive members and went on to settle for those having political affiliations.”
“Allowing you to continue as the chief executive member would mean a loss to the council, and the people. Therefore, you are hereby asked to resign, failing which would force us to take a strong stand against you. Take it as a threat, a dictate or a voice of a concerned citizen,” he said.
