Vilasrao ill, Vayalar gets charge

Chennai, Aug. 7 (PTI): Vayalar Ravi, the overseas affairs minister, was today given additional charge of the micro, small and medium enterprises portfolio held by Vilasrao Deshmukh, who is critically ill.

Deshmukh, 67, was yesterday rushed to a Chennai hospital known for multi-organ transplant.

The hospital did not issue a bulletin this evening on the two-time Maharashtra chief minister’s condition, with a source saying this was in deference to his family’s wishes. However, the source said the minister was on “two-day observation”.

Wife Vaishali and sons Amit, Riteish and Dheeraj are with him.

Deshmukh, who had additional charge of the micro, small and medium enterprises ministry, continues to be the Union minister for science and technology as well as earth sciences.

Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said he spoke to Amit, who is also an MLA, in the afternoon. “I had decided to leave for Chennai to meet him. But family members said his health is stable and nobody is allowed to meet him. Hence, I dropped my plan after consultations with the family members,” Chavan said.

Deshmukh is being treated by liver transplant surgeon Dr Mohamed Rela, sources said.
