Rampurhat, Aug. 7: A Birbhum court today asked police to trace 17 cows and calves that were allegedly missing from custody.
Rampurhat police had on August 4 detained 120 cows and calves and arrested the drivers of two trucks on which they were being taken on the charge of smuggling the animals to Murshisabad.
“The police detained 120 cows and calves from two trucks. But in the case report, only 103 animals were mentioned. So, the additional chief judicial magistrate of Rampurhat, Ananda Kumar Tiwari, ordered the police to trace the missing animals,” said Abhishek Banerjee, the advocate of the owners who produced a receipt today to claim the animals were bought from Birbhum.
Birbhum police chief Rishikesh Meena said: “We will have to find out how the animals went missing.”
