Haryana leader’s ex-wife found dead
Uncle discovers body, hints at depression

Anuradha Bali who changed her name to Fiza after converting to Islam

Mohali, Aug. 6: Anuradha Bali, the divorced second wife of former Haryana deputy chief minister Chander Mohan, was found dead at her Mohali home today.

Police said they recovered the 39-year-old woman’s body after her uncle Satpal, who had come to visit her, informed them. The body was in a highly decomposed state in a bedroom of Anuradha’s Sector 48 residence.

Bottles of liquor were also found in the room but there were no signs of a scuffle, the police said. Anuradha, who had been living alone since her mother’s death in 2010, did not leave a suicide note.

“At this stage, we cannot say anything. We will wait for the post-mortem report to find out the time and cause of her death. It looks like a 3-4 day-old incident,” Mohali deputy superintendent of police D.S. Mann said.

Anuradha had made national headlines in November 2008 by marrying Chander Mohan, the son of former Congress chief minister Bhajan Lal and then deputy chief minister of Haryana. Both had converted to Islam and become man and wife as Chand Mohammad and Fiza.

The marriage lasted only till February 2009. Chander Mohan, who was sacked as deputy chief minister, is reported to have divorced her over the phone by triple talaaq and gone back to his first wife Seema and their three children.

Anuradha’s uncle Satpal told reporters outside her home that she had been suffering from depression. “She was a brave girl who had taken on the high and mighty. She was also thinking of floating a party to expose politicians.”

He said when he landed at the house, the first thing he noticed was the lock was broken. “The stench was unbearable. There were maggots crawling all over her body.”

Fiza, a former Haryana assistant advocate general, is reported to have attempted suicide in 2009 after her marriage broke up. She was apparently not on good terms with some neighbours and was once taken into custody on their complaint that she was creating a public nuisance by screaming and throwing things at them.

This is the second day in a row that Haryana’s Congress government has been left red in the face. Yesterday, former airhostess Geetika Sharma had claimed in her suicide note that she was being “mentally tortured” by Gopal Kanda, the Haryana minister of state for home whose resignation was accepted today.
