Rain deaths

Dehra Dun, Aug. 5 (PTI): Indo-Tibetan Border Police and police personnel today searched debris of flattened homes to look for more bodies in rain-ravaged Uttarakhand where incessant downpour has claimed 34 lives so far.

Six people were still missing in Uttarkashi, an official said. Twenty-three hydel project workers, who were reported missing yesterday following a cloud burst in Uttarkashi, have been declared dead.

Stick on cops

Machilipatnam (PTI): Ten policemen have been suspended on charges of dereliction of duty as 14 gamblers escaped from their custody in a town in Andhra Pradesh. The 14 were among 42 gamblers who were arrested after a raid at a holiday resort on July 22.

Airline fined

New Delhi (PTI): A Delhi consumer forum has ordered British Airways to pay Rs 2 lakh as compensation to a passenger for not informing her that she needed a transit visa for London en route to Delhi and deplaning her at Vancouver airport in Canada.

Rape case

Thane (PTI): Two visually challenged men have been arrested for allegedly trying to push a visually impaired woman out of a moving train near a station in Thane after she refused to withdraw a rape complaint. The duo were hired by two visually challenged youths who had allegedly raped her in October 2011.

Caste system

Mumbai (PTI): The Maharashtra government has decided to implement an online system for caste validation within six months.
