Ex-major jailed
New Delhi, Aug. 4 (PTI): A former army major and his second wife were jailed for 10 years by a Delhi court today for torturing and trying to kill the minor son born from the officer’s first marriage.
The court held them guilty of battering the boy after his mother’s death in 2000. The boy’s counsel said he has been left with “battered baby syndrome” for life. Since 2002, the boy has been in and out of hospital for injuries ranging from fractured ribs to a bleeding skull.
Ramadoss
New Delhi (PTI): A Delhi court has granted bail to former health minister Anbumani Ramadoss. He is accused of allegedly granting permission to a medical college to admit students without having sufficient faculty and infrastructure.
Flash floods
Jammu (PTI): Twenty-two people trapped in flash floods in Kathua and Jammu districts were rescued by police and residents on Saturday, officials said. A flash-flood alert has been sounded in Jammu where intermittent rain resulted in flooding of rivers. People living in low-lying areas have been alerted, an official said.
Gali custody
Bangalore (PTI): A CBI court has extended till September 7 the judicial custody of former minister and mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy and four others arrested in an illegal mining case.
Bear attack
Rewa (PTI): Three persons died after being attacked by a sloth bear in Panika forest of Hanuman range, Madhya Pradesh police said. The attack took place on Friday when the trio had gone to the forest to graze their cattle. An ex-gratia of Rs 5,000 has been awarded to the victims’ kin, which will be increased to Rs 1.5 lakh if the post-mortem established they were killed by an animal.
Bomb parcel
Madurai (PTI): Police on Saturday defused two time bombs received by a former member of the banned al-Umma terror outfit. Umar had received the bombs in a parcel delivered by a boy, the police said.
