Carcass found

Jorhat, Aug.3: A carcass of a male rhino with its horn chopped off was recovered from Kartik Chapori, a sandbar close to Majuli island, today. Forest department said two bullet marks were found in the carcass. he animal had strayed out of Kaziranga National Park with another rhino a few months back.

Man arrested

Jorhat: Police apprehended Tenzem Ao and recovered Rs 23 lakh and a 7.65 mm pistol from him at Mariani on Friday. The police said Ao claims that he was an education department official from Muklumba in Nagaland and was on his way from Mokok-chung to Muklumba after withdrawing cash from a bank at Mokokchung. Ao also said he had stopped at Mariani to repair his vehicle. The police said Ao was found in an inebriated state and was creating a ruckus in a hotel in Mariani when he was picked up.

Celebration

Jorhat: The centenary celebrations of the Central Jail at Borbhetta will begin on Thursday. The inaugural session will be held at the auditorium of the Assam Agricultural University and will be attended by chief minister Tarun Gogoi.
