A friendly neighbour sustained splinter injuries when a trigger-happy local toughie opened fire on a land dealer in Ranchi on Friday afternoon.
The incident, a fresh pointer to deteriorating law and order in the capital, took place on Hans Marg in the upmarket Kanke Road area under the jurisdiction of Gonda police.
Land dealer Jayant Kumar Singh (30), a resident of Mission Gali, was biking home from a bar in Gonda Town around 12.15pm when Ayub Ansari (29) — known for his notoriety in Bhita under Kanke police station — intercepted him.
Sources in Gonda police said there was some argument over money between the two and then a scuffle. Suddenly, Ansari took out a 9mm pistol and fired at Singh. Luckily for him, his neighbour Mathur Biswas (40) shoved him away on time. The bullet missed target. An angry Ansari aimed at Biswas this time. “Though he ducked, the bullet grazed past his right ear and he sustained splinter injury in the neck though not of serious nature,” said a policeman.
As Biswas collapsed, Ansari fled the scene. Gonda OC Raj Kapur said they found a used 9mm cartridge on the spot, besides a shoe. “We believe it belongs to Ansari. We are taking the help of a dog squad to track him down,” he added.
The officer admitted that the exact trigger behind the murder attempt was yet to be ascertained. Singh lodged an FIR with Gonda around 2pm and said Ansari wanted a share from the money he had earned by selling a plot of land in Kanke. “Ansari is a criminal. He wanted a share from my money. When I refused, he tried to kill me,” he told police.
Biswas added that Ansari had tricked him into reaching Singh. “I met him (Ansari), when I was returning from a bar. He asked for a lift on my bike. But, when we reached Hans Marg, he made me stop and intercepted my neighbour (Singh),” Biswas said.
