Student abused at city college

Puja Singh, a student of Rammohan College, the morning section of City College, was allegedly verbally abused and threatened by two men whom she asked to leave the campus for disrupting admission of first-year students on Friday. Singh lodged an FIR with Amherst Street police station. ater, students gheraoed teacher-in-charge Saswati Dasgupta for more than an hour, accusing her of failing to curb the entry of outsiders.

Call centre staff arrested

Nine employees of a call centre in Gariahat were arrested on Friday following a brawl in which some women employees were allegedly molested. According to the complainants, some of them had not received their salaries for two months. When they protested, a section of the staff assaulted them.

Accidents

Pradip Kanji, 32, a resident of Usthi in South 24-Parganas, was run over by a goods vehicle in Haripal in Hooghly on Friday. He was declared dead at hospital. Pradip was on his way to Tarakeswar for pilgrimage. n unidentified man was run over by a bus on Diamond Harbour Road on Friday. The victim was declared dead at SSKM Hospital. Cops later intercepted the bus on Remount Road but the driver and the conductor managed to escape.

Robbers in net

Police arrested three men in Rajarhat on Friday for allegedly trying to break into a Union Bank ATM in Baguiati in July.

Ferry mishap

A launch carrying around 30 passengers from Howrah’s Ramakrishnapur Ghat hit a wooden plank used by passengers to board the vessel at Babughat on Friday. The passengers escaped unhurt.

Correction

It was erroneously reported that the West Bengal University of Technology team had won the inter-university national rowing championship in 2011 in the Metro report “Rower strikes Olympic ticket gold” on July 27. The WBUT team had lost in the bronze medal play-off. The error is regretted.
