Calcutta, Aug. 3: Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today criticised the Mamata Banerjee government for not reducing taxes on petrol, saying people were suffering because of the lack of such a relief.
“Petrol prices were hiked a few days ago. Price of petrol went down in some states. But in our state, it went up. Why? Because our government is collecting huge tax revenues from petrol. Why didn’t the government reduce taxes on petrol?’’ the former chief minister said at a Left rally at Rani Rashmoni Avenue this evening.
“The government here doesn’t have any concern for the people. It could have provided relief, but it didn’t. That’s why the people of Bengal are suffering,’’ Bhattacharjee added.
Referring to Mamata’s plan to hit the streets against the petrol price hike, the CPM leader said: “How will that help the people? Can she avoid responsibility for the fuel price rise? How can she now talk about protests?’’
