Cell tower notice

New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI): Delhi High Court has issued notices to the Union health ministry and the department of telecommunication asking them to respond to a plea seeking removal of cell phone towers from residential buildings and public places, citing health hazards.

The petitioner, a Delhi resident, also sought a direction for implementation of the Prime Minister-headed inter ministerial committee’s recommendations on the issue.

Swine flu toll

Bangalore (PTI): Swine flu has claimed 28 lives in Karnataka this year, health and family welfare minister Aravind Limbavali informed the Assembly on Wednesday. More than 350 people have tested positive for the H1N1 virus till July 23, he added.

Rajasthan act

Jaipur (PTI): Rajasthan on Wednesday became the first state to implement the Right to Hearing Act, which ensures time-bound hearing and disposal of complaints related to governance. “The government is working on a theme to provide transparent and responsible governance”, chief minister Ashok Gehlot said.

Valley attack

Srinagar (PTI): Militants hurled a grenade at CRPF personnel guarding a bridge in Srinagar on Wednesday. The bomb fell short and exploded on the road, without causing casualties, police said. A hunt is on to arrest the culprits.

Couple killed

Bangalore (PTI): A middle-aged couple from Agra were found murdered in their eatery in Bangalore’s Balepet area on Tuesday. Their seven-year-old daughter, who was severely injured, has been admitted to a hospital. They were attacked with iron rods by unidentified persons, police said. An Assamese youth who used to work in the eatery is absconding.

Shrine gift

Shirdi (PTI): An unidentified person donated two diamonds worth Rs 1.18 crore to the Saibaba temple here. The stones, each studded in a gold pendant, were found in a cash box on Tuesday, Saibaba trust officials said.
