Charges filed in Israeli car blast case

Kazmi

New Delhi, July 31: P. Chidambaram today said a Delhi police team would go to Iran to question Israeli car explosion suspects but declined comment on whether Iranian Republican Guards were involved in the bombing in the capital.

“I have also read it in newspapers and cannot comment on this. Now I can say this much that there are some persons who we believe are in Iran, who need to be questioned,” the outgoing home minister said.

“That’s why we asked the government of Iran for permission for one of our teams to go to Iran to question them. They have agreed but there were some problems with the dates. I think fresh dates have been fixed and a team from Delhi police will go to Iran to question those persons.”

Within a few minutes of the attack on February 13, Israel had alleged it was the handiwork of Iran. Indian security agencies had then said they were “caught between two friends”.

Delhi police today filed a chargesheet in the car blast case. Tal Yehoshua Koren, 42, the wife of the Israeli defence attache, was injured in the explosion triggered by a biker who stuck a magnetic bomb on an Israeli embassy Innova and fled.

In the chargesheet, the police accused Urdu journalist Syed Mohammad Kazmi of conspiring with foreign elements and others for the terror strike. They named alleged Iranian nationals Houshang Afshar Irani, Masod Sedaghatzadeh, Syed Ali Mehdi Sadr and Mohammed Reza Abolghasemi as suspects.

Kazmi, 50, who worked for a radio service in Iran, was arrested on March 6 and has been in Tihar jail since.

According to the chargesheet, Houshang Afshar Irani went to Bangkok and then to Kuala Lumpur. Masod Sedaghatzadeh has been in detention in Malaysia since March 14.

The court had earlier issued open warrants against all four.

According to the police, Afshar visited India on April 25, 2011, and left on May 6, 2011. He came back on January 29, 2012, but left for Malaysia on February 13 evening, within hours of the attack on the Israeli diplomat.

The police claimed Afshar had stayed at a Delhi hotel and an analysis of his mobile number had revealed that he contacted Kazmi. They alleged that the motorbike purchased by Afshar was seized from Kazmi’s house.
