Romancing bygone heroes

- Film festival focus on Rajesh, Dev and Shammi

If Anand makes you smile through your tears, yahoo still makes you do a jig and Raju Guide’s journey makes you philosophical, Celluloid Chapter, Jamshedpur, promises a treat in store for you.

Fans of Rajesh Khanna, Shammi Kapoor and Dev Anand can hope to relive the magic of these matinee heartthrobs at a film festival dedicated exclusively to the trio who passed away in close succession to each other recently.

Although exact dates have not been decided, the screenings will take place in August.

“The festival is a tribute to the great actors of Hindi film industry who have made enormous contribution to cinema and impacted many people. We will host the event in August,” said Amitava Ghosh, secretary of Celluloid Chapter.

He said a three-film retrospective of each actor would be screened at the festival. Members of the film appreciation outfit will choose the movies considered landmarks for these actors.

The Celluloid Chapter will also celebrate 100 years of Indian cinema by organising a film festival titled ‘Down the memory lane’, showing a series of eclectic films of directors Guru Dutt, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Shyam Benegal, Bimal Roy, Raj Kapoor, Mani Ratnam, Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen and others.

“We will dedicate a week or a fortnight to a particular director. We will host this festival every month. Obviously, the finest films of each director will be showcased, though what is finest is subjective for every film buff,” Ghosh said.

Celluloid Chapter has 217 members, but wants to reach out to the greater community of cinema lovers, he added.
