Woman’s hand almost severed

An elderly woman’s left hand was almost severed from her body when the bus she was travelling in brushed against a truck near Pailan in South 24-Parganas on Tuesday evening. Manorama Manna, 62, a resident of Sirakhol in Bishnupur, on the southern fringes of the city, has been hospitalised with her arm hanging from the shoulder with a thin strand of tissue, said police. She was returning home after visiting her granddaughter at the Thakurpukur ESI Hospital. She was sitting in a window seat with her elbow sticking out, said police sources. From witnesses’ statements, we gathered that her hand was crushed between the bus and a truck in Pailan,” said an officer of Bishnupur police station. “Her screams alerted the bus driver, who braked instantly. Her hand was almost severed.” esidents of the area wrecked the truck and blocked on Diamond Harbour Road for nearly 90 minutes from 5pm protesting rash driving and demanding the immediate arrest of the drivers. The drivers of both vehicles fled the spot.

Lid blown off sleaze racket

A woman was arrested from a flat in Ballygunge Place East on Tuesday for allegedly running a sleaze racket. Poly Kanungo, 54, had been running the racket from a rented flat. Three alleged sex workers were “rescued” from the flat, said a police source. Manohar Huda and Neha Bhatt were also arrested from the house for being involved in human trafficking, said a source.

Drug arrest

Saidul Mollah, a resident of GJ Khan Road in Tiljala, was arrested from his home on Monday for possessing cocaine worth Rs 65,000. Police sources said he had already sold cocaine worth Rs 44,000.

HS review

The state Higher Secondary council on Tuesday published the results of examinees who had opted for review and scrutiny of their marks. Of the 38,806 candidates whose results were declared, the marks of 9,470 candidates have increased. The marks of 885 candidates have decreased after review, while that of the rest have not changed.

Suicide

An undertrial at the Alipore jail committed suicide on Tuesday by hanging himself inside the bathroom. Lakshman Tanti, 22, had been booked for torturing his wife for dowry. He was declared dead at SSKM Hospital. Tanti was reportedly undergoing treatment for a mental disorder.

Teen drowns

A teenager drowned in a pond at Bhachapara in the Thakurpukur police station area on Tuesday. Raj Sikdar, 14, had gone to the pond to wash himself after playing football, sources said. Police do not suspect any foul play.
