A Barasat court on Monday sentenced a farmer to life imprisonment for raping an 11-year-old girl 17 years ago. The girl later died.
On Friday, district judge Durga Khaitan had convicted Md Sorabuddin of the rape at Goakhali in North 24-Parganas on October 26, 1995.
According to court records, Sorabuddin, then 20, had accosted the girl in a field while she was taking food to her father and left her unconscious and bleeding after raping her.
The girl’s father found her while returning home. She was admitted to hospital. After suffering close to a year, she died at her home.
“Police had arrested Sorabuddin on the basis of the girl’s statement. Her mother maintains that she died of pain and trauma. However, murder charges could not be slapped on Sorabuddin,” said the lawyer representing the girl’s family.
Sorabuddin got bail months after his arrest and was out till last Friday. He had married and has two children.
On Monday, he was brought from Dum Dum Central jail to the court, where the district judge sentenced him in the presence of his family members.
He was also fined Rs 5,000, which he has to pay to the victim’s family.
“It’s a rare judgment. It has been a long wait but we finally feel that justice has been delivered to my little girl. This sentence should stop others like Sorabuddin from committing heinous crimes against children,” said the victim’s mother.
