Punjab bans ACs in offices

Chandigarh, July 29 (PTI): The Punjab government today banned the use of air conditioners in all its offices, boards and corporations with immediate effect to tide over acute power shortage in the state.

It also decided to change office timings from August 1, a spokesperson for the chief minister’s office said. The new office hours will be from 8am to 2pm without lunch break.

The spokesperson said chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had asked the chief secretary to issue detailed instructions to the district administration for this. The instructions will remain in force till further orders.

All district heads of the offices would be solely responsible for ensuring strict compliance of these instructions, he said.

These instructions would also be applicable to the camp offices of divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners and senior superintendents of police besides the commissioners of the municipal corporations in the state.

The spokesperson also said supply of drinking water would be ensured at the doorsteps of residents in cities and towns facing water shortage in the absence of power supply through water tankers to avoid water-borne diseases.
