Jharia nurtures JRD’s legacy

The man who would have had 108 candles on his birthday cake was a young-at-heart humanitarian.

This is why soccer and scholarships for rural teens, a cross-country race, distribution of crutches, footwear and medical kits to the ailing were part of festivities that Tata Steel (Jharia division) arranged to remember visionary industrialist Bharat Ratna J.R.D. Tata on his birth anniversary on Sunday.

The event started on Sunday morning at the office of Tata Steel general manager (Jharia division) amid a host of officials, union leaders and employees.

Deputy general manager Sanjay Kumar Singh spoke on Tata’s life and ethics while regional secretary of Rastriya Colliery Mazdoor Sangathan Santosh Kumar Mahto garlanded the industrialist’s portrait. Those present included Jamadoba group chief Manish Mishra, Rastriya Colliery Mazdoor Sangathan (Bhelatand) B.H. Roy and the secretary of Sijua workers’ union B.K. Dubey.

Bright students of Tata DAV School, Jamadoba, and Tata DAV School, Sijua, were feted and participants and winners of activities related to Ethics Month (July) awarded.

Manish Mishra flagged off an Under-17 cross-country race from the Tata Steel Digwadih Stadium in which 221 boys and 81 girls took part amid cheers.

Keeping alive Tata’s humane legacy, a disability care management camp was also held at Sparsh, a collaboration between Tata Steel and Lepra India at Jamadoba, Digwadih. Medical kits, crutches and micro-cellular rubber footwear designed by Sparsh were donated to 150 leprosy patients, those crippled by the disease and those disabled by birth. A diabetes diagnostic centre was also started.
