Fatal mishap on crater road

A 30-year-old man was crushed under the wheels of a speeding truck on the battered Chowka-Kandra Road in Seraikela-Kharsawan district, about 20km from Jamshedpur, on Sunday.

Bicycle-borne Shukhlal Munda, a resident of Bansa in Chowka, was on his way to work at an industrial unit in Adityapur when the accident occurred around 8.30am.

Sources said there was a huge crater at the mishap point. “Another truck was coming from the opposite direction as Shukhlal approached the weigh-bridge at Kandra More, leaving little space for him to negotiate the turn. As a result, the truck, which was coming from behind, failed to control its speed and hit him. Shukhlal fell on the road and the truck ran over him,” said an eyewitness.

The truck driver fled, leaving the vehicle a little distance away. Soon after the mishap, local residents set up a blockade on Kandra-Chowka Road, demanding compensation for the victim’s family and road repairs. They didn’t allow police to take away the body.

The blockade was lifted around 10.30am after sub-inspector of Kandra police station Ajay Thakur summoned the truck owner and, with interference of Kandra mukhiya Honi Singh Munda, made him pay Rs 50,000 to Shukhlal’s family.
