Imphal, July 28: Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh could not make it to London to watch the Olympic Games but he compensated that by paying a visit to Imphal’s Khuman Lampak sports complex this morning to watch young boys and girls practise.
Accompanied by Manipur Olympic Association president Bijoy Koijam and youth affairs and sports director H. Dilip Singh, the chief minister spent more than an hour at the sports complex inspecting the current facilities and watching the practice sessions. Ibobi Singh is in charge of the sports department.
He visited, among others, the main stadium, hockey stadium, indoor stadium, shooting range, swimming pool, and the boxing ring. Ibobi Singh tried his shooting skills by using a pistol (sports pistol) at the shooting range.
The chief minister cancelled his trip to London because of a drought-like situation in the state. But with rains since yesterday and the Loktak lift irrigation system in use to irrigate four Assembly constituencies in Bishnupur district, Ibobi Singh today took time off to pay attention to sports infrastructure. Five players from Manipur, including two girls, are in the Indian contingent.
