IIT Kanpur plea on eligibility

New Delhi, July 28: The IIT Kanpur senate today said the new eligibility criterion for IIT admission should not apply to students who cleared their Class XII board exam this year and will be taking the Joint Entrance Examination next year.

From next year, students will need to figure among the top 20 percentile from their respective Class XII boards and social categories to be eligible for an IIT seat. Till this year, general category and OBC candidates needed to score 60 per cent in Class XII board exams to qualify for an IIT seat, and Dalit and ST students needed to score 55 per cent.

“Those who have secured 60 per cent in their Class XII exam (in 2012) should be admitted to the IITs next year depending on their performance in the JEE Main and JEE Advanced,” a senate member said.

The government has already offered the 2012 students the option of taking the board exam again next year. But many of these students say that the stress of taking both the board exam and the JEE will reduce their prospects in both.
