A Hollywood celebrity you would love to dress?
A Masaba Gupta must-have:
It has to be the palm-print sari. It was part of my first collection and it has by far been the most popular pick!
A fashion trend that needs to go:
Balloon skirts. I don’t think they are designed for the Indian woman. Our women have big hips and those skirts tend to just highlight that fact!
A fashion trend you’d like to see making a comeback:
Your style staples:
I’m not a living example of my work for sure! I’m far from being quirky. For me, my signature style would be a basic black T-shirt and jeans. I’m not one for colour!
The signature style of:
a. Sonam Kapoor: Vintage.
b. Vidya Balan: Classic India.
c. Deepika Padukone: Sporty chic.
d. Dia Mirza: Feminine.
e. Sonakshi Sinha: Boho chic.
Your design influences:
Everyday life and its experiences. I’m also heavily inspired by books and paintings.
Your favourite international label:
Your style icon:
My mother Neena Gupta.
DNA of the Masaba Gupta label:
The statement prints and bold use of colours.
What makes Masaba, the label, stand out?
I feel my brand has a very strong signature style. My designs are modern while being rooted in the traditional Indian culture. My prints might be quirky but they are still something an Indian woman would feel comfortable wearing. I don’t like working with the monotony of prints and cuts already available. I think that’s what sets me apart from the rest. I like to express an eclectic quirky style on basic fabrics like silk and ikat.
