How is your Believe tour coming along?
It’s coming along great, I’m really excited to be doing it. I love performing, it’s one of my favourite parts of this career and I hope to be able to reach out to all my fans by putting some great performances.
How about coming to India given that your latest album Believe certified gold in India within a week of its release?
I’d love to come to India. Right now nothing is really planned; but I would really love to be able to come to India and perform for my fans there.
Currently, you seem to have undergone a visible makeover in terms of your music, look, hairstyle. What prompted it? Is it a sign of Justin coming of age?
I think that these changes are a sign that I’m growing up. These changes also translate through in my new album where I think listeners will be able to see how my life is changing and that even my music is getting more mature. I think my fans will really get to see me break out of my mould and reveal the real me through this album.
Were you worried when your voice started changing?
Not really, it’s a natural process and it was bound to happen. I don’t think that my talent will be affected by it really. Everyone goes through this.
You’ve already topped music charts, there’s a book on you, a 3D movie and a wax statue at Madame Tussauds.... Do you ever miss doing some of the things that youngsters your age do?
It’s been a pretty amazing journey, and I think that I’m very lucky to be given the chance to do what I love to do. I get to travel the world and I’ve done a lot of cool things. I got to be, you know, present at the Grammys, present at the VMAs. I performed for the president of the United States.
I do miss certain things though, of course. I really miss my family, I don’t get to spend a lot of time with them and my friends, but I wouldn’t change any of it. I really love what I do.
How do you handle all the female attention?
I don’t mind it at all. I mean I wouldn’t be where I am if I weren’t good at what I do. I pride myself on being an artiste first.
Whose advice do you count on the most?
I think that the best piece of advice I’ve ever been given is by Usher who told me to always stay humble. It’s important to stay grounded when you’re in this industry and I try to abide by that as much as I can.
You and Selena have been going strong. Do you influence and advise each other. Any plans of doing a song or an album together?
Selena and I share everything with each other and I think she’s amazing as a person as well as an artiste. We don’t have any plans in the pipeline yet but I think she’s very talented and I would love to collaborate with her one day.
You’ve said that Michael Jackson has been the biggest inspiration for you. Tell us more about it...
I’ve always admired Michael Jackson, I think he was a phenomenal artiste and he’s been a source of great inspiration to me.
Does acting interest you? Would you like to take it up more seriously?
I’ve done some acting and it was fun but I’m focused on my music career right now and on honing my skills as an artiste. But who knows, maybe someday I could dabble in acting a little.
Ten years from now, where and how would you like to see yourself?
I would still want my fans to love me and I would like my music to grow with my age.
What is your favourite kind of music and who do you love listening to?
I listen to all kinds of music but I think my favourites are Usher, Chris Brown, Kanye West, The Tragically Hip, Ne-Yo, Guns N’ Roses.
