Mithun Chakraborty and Soumitra Chatterjee share a private moment on the dais during the state government’s film awards. In his speech, Soumitra described the award as “a good initiative” and hoped that the new generation will be encouraged through it. “Whenever you call me, I will stand beside you. I was always there for you, I will be there for you,” Mithun promised the chief minister.

Mamata Banerjee gave away lifetime achievement awards to Soumitra Chatterjee, Sabitri Chatterjee and Supriya Chowdhury at the state government’s first film awards at the Science City auditorium on Tuesday, the 32nd death anniversary of Uttam Kumar. Mithun Chakraborty got the first Mahanayak Samman, named after the Tolly legend.
“I would have been happy if Mrinal Sen had also been present here,” Soumitra said during his speech. Others on stage told him that Sen had been invited but could not attend because he was unwell.
The chief minister, who described the initiative as “a feeble attempt”, conferred special film awards on 42 others, including Aparna Sen, Madhabi Mukherjee, Haradhan Bandyopadhyay and Goutam Ghose. She also announced a Rs 5,000 monthly allowance for five ailing actors and technicians.
