July 21: Three youths were killed when their car braked suddenly to avoid a pothole on NH2 in Durgapur and was hit from behind by a truck late last night.

Those killed were contract workers of the Damodar Valley Corporation power plant in Andal. The eight others in the Maruti Omni, including the driver, were admitted to hospital with injuries.

“The workers were travelling to office for their night shift when the accident happened near the Gandhi More crossing. The Omni driver braked all of a sudden to avoid a pothole and the truck behind it could not stop and rammed into it. The Omni skidded and overturned,” a police officer said.

The police took the victims to Durgapur subdivisional hospital, where three were declared dead on arrival. The dead have been identified as Krishna Chowdhury, 28, Dara Chowdhury, 25, and Dulal Chand Chowdhury, 24.

The truck driver sped away with his vehicle.
