Theft bid whiff in youth death

The partially burnt body of a youth was found beside the wall of a godown adjoining the closed Lalababa Foundry at Burmamines on Tuesday morning with police suspecting that he met an accidental death while trying to sneak into the premises to steal on Monday night.

The deceased was identified as 22-year-old Mahtar Alam, a resident of Azadnagar in Mango. There was also a deep cut on Alam’s head, which indicated that he might have fallen down from the wall.

Police also found a cellphone, which helped them trace his family. The team, which rushed to the spot, dialled a few numbers that they found from the phone. After several tries, they finally managed to contact the deceased’s family.

Officer in charge of Burmamines police station sub-inspector Sanjiv Mishra said that though there was no material evidence against the deceased, it appeared that he had gone to the scrap iron godown with the intention to steal.

“It seems that the deceased climbed the boundary wall and was looking for a gap to enter the premises when he came in contact with an electric wire and fell down,” he said.

Mishra added they were not sure whether the youth died of electrocution or the fall. “The post-mortem will make things clear,” he said.
