Jorhat, July 16: Excitement runs high at Biplabi Bir Sankar Baruah Park at New Amolapatty in Golaghat town nowadays.
The reason?
A toy train chugging inside the park in the afternoons.
Ajit Baruah, chairman of the Golaghat Municipal Board, which introduced the service recently, told this correspondent over phone today that the toy train had become a hit with people, especially among children who are coming to the park with their parents in large numbers for a ride.
Introduced a couple of days ago, the toy train runs on tracks laid around the park’s pond. It has five bogeys and makes three rounds in a trip for Rs 10.
It can seat 25 persons. The train runs on electricity and a generator has been installed to keep it running during power cuts, Baruah said.
“We wanted to do something more to provide amusement to children who regularly visit the park in large numbers,” the board chairman said.
Baruah said the board has spent Rs 50 lakh from funds received from the Centre, the state government and from its own fund for the project. Of this, Rs 25 lakh was spent on purchasing the train from a Haryana-based private company.
With the timing allotted for the service being 4pm to 8pm, the response has been quite encouraging, Baruah said.
But this is not all. Children and adults alike can look forward to more fun with the municipal board planning to introduce a boat service in the pond soon.
