3 held for jewellery thefts

Three people have been arrested in connection with two thefts in the city. Tridib Chakraborty and Raja Chakraborty have been held for allegedly stealing Rs 1.6 lakh and jewellery from a Parnasree house they had been hired to paint. Some of the booty has also been recovered, police said.

Panna Naskar was arrested for allegedly stealing Rs 1,000 and jewellery from the flat of Vikas Chowdhury in Lake Gardens on June 10.

Emergency landing: A Jet Airways flight from Hong Kong to Mumbai made an emergency landing at the Calcutta airport on Wednesday after passenger Bharat Anand Shukla, a resident of Mumbai, complained of chest pain. After the plane landed at 9.34pm, Shukla was rushed to Charnock Hospital off VIP Road. Doctors said he had suffered a cardiac arrest and is in intensive care. The plane took off around midnight.

Electrocuted: Kasinath Sarkar, 55, a resident of Sovabazar, was electrocuted on Wednesday afternoon after he touched the iron gate of a shop selling homoeopathic medicines, where he worked. He was taken to RG Kar hospital, where he was declared dead.

Accidents: Two persons died in accidents in the city on Wednesday morning. Around 5am, a goods vehicle mounted a footpath on Brabourne Road and ran over three pavement dwellers. One of them, 35-year-old Md Yusuf, was declared dead in hospital. At 6am, a loaded tanker knocked down cyclist Gopal Maity, 40, at Naktala. He was declared dead in hospital.

Platform kids: Twenty-five children who live in Sealdah station took part in a dance programme, Platform Beat, organised near the main gate of the station by NGO Kolkata Sanved, in collaboration with CINI ASHA. The event was supported by the India Foundation for the Arts.

Newborn: An unconscious newborn girl was found in a drain on Dum Dum Road on Wednesday. She was declared dead in hospital.
