Hospital theft

New Delhi, July 4 (PTI): A bag containing jewellery was allegedly stolen from a doctor couple in a city hospital last month.

Madhuri Gupta had come for a CT scan and had to keep her ornaments in a bag with her husband, 84-year-old Madanlal Gupta, who waited outside the test room. He was called in after Madhuri started feeling unwell. He left the bag behind but found it missing when he came out. The bag had a diamond ring and gold bangles. A complaint was lodged yesterday, police said.

New Delhi (PTI): The national consumer commission has directed the United India Insurance to pay Rs 28.49 lakh to a Mumbai-based jeweller from whose store 6.8kg of gold ornaments were stolen in January 2000.

Rain collapse

Mumbai (PTI): One person was killed on Wednesday when heavy rains triggered the collapse of a four-storeyed building. Gopal Bhavan, in Malad, was already evacuated after the civic body declared the structure “dangerous”. Five fire engines were rushed to the spot, officials said.

Contractor

Thane (PTI): A contractor, who was given the task of renovating the buildings in a Thane housing society, has been directed by a district consumer forum to pay Rs 7 lakh as fine for deficient services after the residents alleged that the construction was faulty.

Force review

New Delhi (PTI): The Union home ministry has begun a review of the operational preparedness and personnel issues of all central paramilitary forces. The performance of the BSF was evaluated on Tuesday and the review of other forces will follow.

Poet dead

Guwahati: Assamese poet Hiren Bhattacharjya died on Wednesday morning at Dispur hospital. The 80-year-old poet had been admitted with breathing problems on June 12. He was being treated for multiple ailments, doctors said. He leaves behind his wife Parul, daughter Santa, son-in-law Pranjal Sarma and two grandchildren.
