‘Missiles’ at the Olympics

London: Surface-to-air defence systems will be deployed at six sites around London 2012 venues with the approval of the International Olympic Committee despite a legal challenge from some east London residents, the government has announced.

The ground-based air defence systems will be part of the government’s “severe” threat level in place by mid-July which includes placing high velocity missiles on the roof of the Lexington Building, Fairfield Road, Bow and the Fred Wigg Tower at Waltham Forest.

The Ministry of Defence has also confirmed it will locate Rapier missiles at Blackheath Common, the William Girling Reservoir, Oxleas Meadow at Greenwich and Barn Hill at Epping Forest.

The Olympics begin later this month.
