Honour for Mary Kom

New Delhi: Five-time world champion MC Mary Kom will soon be made an honorary Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army for her immense contribution to the sport in the country.

Set to be the first woman boxer to represent the nation in the forthcoming London Olympics, Mary Kom will become the fifth sportsperson to be conferred with the honorary ranks by the Army or Air Force. The other four who have received the honour are cricketers Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Abhinav Bindra.

While Dhoni, Kapil and Bindra were made Lieutenant Colonel, Tendulkar holds the rank of honorary Group Captain in the Indian Air Force.

Mary Kom said the official announcement will be made shortly. “It is in the process and the announcement by the Army would be made soon,” she said.
