Molested at doorstep

A 10-year-old girl was allegedly molested on the staircase of her apartment block in Garfa by a youth who had gone to visit a friend in the building on Sunday night.

The accused, Abhinava Chatterjee, also allegedly assaulted the girl’s mother when she confronted him.

Chatterjee, 27, and 25-year-old Rahul Sanpui, a friend with whom he had gone to the Garfa building, have been arrested. Police said both worked as credit appraisal officials at an APC Road branch of a nationalised bank.

Chatterjee is a resident of SN Banerjee Road, while Sanpui lives in Garfa.

The police said the family had just returned from an outing and the girl’s father was parking their car in the garage of the building when the alleged incident occurred.

“Like other Sundays, I, my wife and our daughter had gone to my wife’s parental home near VIP Bazar, off the Bypass. We returned home around 12.15am. My wife and daughter got off first and headed for our apartment,” recalled the girl’s father.

Moments later, while he was on his way to the flat after parking their car, he noticed a youth coming out of the three-storeyed building.

“My wife was close on his heels. When I asked her what the matter was, she said the man had molested our daughter on the staircase and assaulted her when she protested,” the artist said.

“The man was drunk. When I confronted him, he denied having done anything wrong. He, however, apologised when I called my neighbours. Soon, his two friends came out of the building. They were all drunk,” he said.

Initially, the family had decided not to lodge any police complaint and let the youths leave. But they changed their mind when sometime later a neighbour spotted Chatterjee lying unconscious on a vacant plot near the building.

“We were alerted after a resident spotted Abhinava Chatterjee lying senseless. We went to the spot and took him into custody after the girl’s family lodged a written complaint. Another youth was later arrested,” said an officer of Garfa police station.

“My granddaughter is traumatised. We had never thought such a thing could happen at our doorstep,” said the grandmother of the Class V student.

In May, two youths had abused and threatened to assault a woman in front of her husband in Garfa.
