Title for Deep

Calcutta: Grandmaster Deep Sengupta of Indian Oil won the Alekhine Chess Club-organised Shankar Roy Memorial Rapid Chess Tournament with seven points, at the Gorky Sadan, here on Sunday.

Grandmaster Neelotpal Das and Fide Master Sayantan Das also scored 7 points each but finished second and third respectively.

On the top board, Sayantan held Deep in a well-fought battle. The opening was highly irregular transposing into a position with an isolated queen’s pawn. Both Sengupta and Das tried to force their way but in the end preferred to sign truce.

On the second board, Neelotpal, played with black, opted for French Defence against Laltu Chatterjee of Railways who converted it into a King’s Indian Attack. It was a gem of a positional grinding by winner Neelotpal.

IM Suvrajit Saha (6.5) agreed to a quick draw with Anjan Mallick (6.5).

Diptayan Ghose (6.5) showed his attacking skill against Swarup Sarkar (6) with a direct attack on the black King. Swarup opted for King’s Indian Defence but he was swiftly defeated by a beautiful King side onslaught upon the King.
