Girl raped at station, cousin molested

Bolpur, June 30: A teenaged girl from Jharkhand staying the night in the waiting room of a Birbhum railway station was allegedly raped early today near the station by three youths who first molested her and her cousin.

The girls had reached Rampurhat last night in a local train from Burdwan, where they had been visiting an aunt, and had decided to spend a few hours in the waiting room before catching a 4am bus to Dumka.

“The girls left the waiting room around 3am and were walking towards the bus stand when they were attacked by the youths. The trio molested the cousins. The elder of the two sisters managed to flee but the younger one could not. She was raped,’’ a railway police officer said.

The elder sister sought the help of people standing at the bus stop, a little distance away. “They rushed to the spot and caught one of the accused, Matin Sheikh,” the officer said.

The other two fled and are yet to be arrested. The police said Matin was a rickshaw-puller.

The girls lodged a complaint at Rampurhat police station. They have been admitted to the Rampurhat subdivisional hospital.

“A case of gang-rape has been started against the three. We are trying to contact the family members of the girls,” said Debasmita Das, the Birbhum additional superintendent of police.

An officer said the other two accused had been identified.
