Mumbai, June 26: Vilasrao Deshmukh today told a judicial commission that he had forwarded a letter seeking land allotment for the Adarsh society to the revenue department, then headed by Congress colleague Ashok Chavan, “without reading” its contents.
“I read the subject matter only and forwarded this letter to the concerned officer…. I do not know what action, if any, was taken on this letter by the department,” Union minister Deshmukh, who was Maharashtra chief minister then, told the panel as a witness.
The 12-year-old letter was from Kanhaiyalal Gidwani, the building’s main promoter who was also a Congress MLC. “Prin. Sec. (Rev). pl. call for the proposal and put up immediately…,” Deshmukh wrote.
The two-time chief minister said he often used “immediately” as files moved at a snail’s pace in the secretariat. His deposition will continue tomorrow. Chavan is slated to appear on Saturday.
