Dhaka, June 26 (PTI): Bangladesh has appointed Lt Gen. Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan as the new army chief after elevating his rank to “general”.

Bhuiyan, who has previously served as the Quarter Master General, took charge from outgoing army chief Gen. Md Abdul Mubeen at a ceremony held at the army headquarters yesterday.

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina witnessed the ceremony as Navy Chief Vice-Admiral Z.U. Ahmed and Air Force Chief Air Marshal Mohammad Enamul Bari decorated him (Bhuiyan) with the new insignia” at the Prime Minister’s office, a government spokesman said.

Bhuiyan had earlier served as the army’s Chief of General Staff, UN Force Commander, and had held several important commanding positions. A cadet of the 3rd BMA Short Course, Gen. Bhuiyan went to Faujderhat Cadet College and was commissioned in November 1976.
