Tagore boat replicas

Santiniketan, June 26: Visva Bharati authorities will on July 23 formally accept the replicas of two boats — Padma and Chapala — used by Rabindranath Tagore.

The boat replicas, one a bajra and the other a dinghy attached to it, will be handed over by Bangladesh information and cultural affairs minister Abul Kalam Azad and will be showcased at the university’s Rabindra Bhavan museum.

India’s cultural affairs minister Kumari Selja will also attend the program, spokesperson Amrit Sen said.

Tagore is known to have used the Padma, a houseboat, regularly for a decade from 1890.The original barge got destroyed over time and as part of the poet’s 150th birth anniversary celebrations, the Bangladesh government has made a 40-foot wooden reproduction of the Padma complete with its dinghy, Chapala.
