Archers settle for a silver
Calcutta: Having secured the Olympic berth in the men’s team event, India narrowly lost to hosts US under gusty wind conditions in Ogden to settle for silver and conclude their campaign in the Archery World Cup Stage III.
The men’s team of Tarundeep Rai, Jayanta Talukdar and Rahul Banerjee were locked 213-213 to force a shoot-off where the trio lost 27-28 to settle for a silver medal.
On Sunday, Asian Games silver medallist Rai lost the individual bronze play-off to Gael Prevost.
Sad end
Madrid: Miquel Roque, a Real Betis defender who started out in Barcelona's youth ranks and had a stint at Liverpool, has died of cancer at the age of 23, Betis said on Sunday. “Miki Roque had been fighting pelvic cancer since March 2011,” the La Liga club said in a statement.
Veron retires
Buenos Aires: Former Argentine international playmaker Juan Sebastian Veron, 37, played the final match of a distinguished career in the final round of games in the country’s Closing Championship.
Veron was part of the Estudiantes side that drew 2-2 away to Union de Santa Fe to end the season in ninth place.

Syrian support
London: A Syrian showjumper, Ahmad Hamsho, competing in the London Olympics has launched a staunch defence of his country’s regime, declaring: “We are with Bashar al-Assad.”
Hamsho denied that his Government was responsible for violence that has left more than 10,000 people dead.

Badree named
Calcutta: The selection committee of the WICB announced a 13-member West Indies squad for the two Digicel Twenty20 Internationals against New Zealand to be played on June 30 and July 1, at the Central Broward Regional Park in Florida. Leg-spinner Samuel Badree has been picked for a senior West Indies side for the first time.

Gambhir trip
Mumbai: After helping Kolkata Knight Riders lift the Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy this season, Gautam Gambhir is enjoying a “perfect holiday”, in Speilberg, Austria.
Gambhir, who took a trip to the headquarters of Red Bull in Salzburg, said, “After the end of the IPL season and especially after winning it, this certainly was the perfect holiday.”
