June 24: Handmade pistols from Bihar are being supplied to robbers and other criminals in the city. This disturbing fact came to light following the arrest of Gajinder Rai, a suspected arms supplier, last night.
Rai, 38, a resident of Motihari district in Bihar, was arrested from his rented house at Kushal Nagar in connection with the recent attack on a businessman Dindayal Saraogi at Narayan Nagar under Bharalumukh police station. Saraogi, a steel businessman was shot at and his cash snatched on June 4 while he was returning home from his shop at Athgaon.
Saraogi was hit by a bullet and is recuperating.
Sources at Bharalumukh police station said Rai was arrested based on confessions made by two persons —Bhupinder and Kailash Bhagat — allegedly involved in the shootout. Both are from Bihar and were arrested with the help of Bihar police.
“Investigations into the recent robbery and shootout cases in the city have revealed that the criminals here are using hand-made pistols from Bihar. Gajinder told us that he supplied the country-made pistol used in the shootout and we suspect that he is part of the big racket which brings country-made arms from Bihar and sells them to the local criminals here,” the source said.
The police said Gajinder was also arrested last year by Chandmari police station with a pen pistol, which he was supposed to supply to criminals in the city.
“He has been staying in the Bamunimaidam area and even worked in BG Yard as a labourer. But we have information that he is involved in criminal activities in the area, too,” the source said.
“We hope his interrogation will reveal more names and we will try to arrest them and find out how the illegal arms made in Bihar are reaching the city,” the source added.
