Dhubri, June 24: Two successive robberies at Thanapara and Panbari villages under Hatsinghimari police station of south Salmara-Mancachar subdivision of Dhubri district last night and the night before, have left the villagers shaken and apprehensive.
Robbers escaped with Rs 7 lakh cash from two villages, which are just 100 metres from Kharuabandha police outpost under Hatsinghimari police station of the district.
The villagers said when the police came out to stop the robbers with canes, they were beaten up.
A police source in Hatsighmari said a group of eight robbers broke into the house of Ashraful Ali Khandakar, who is a tenant in the house of Abdul Latif Mondal of Panbari village, and escaped with Rs 8,000 and valuables worth Rs 2 lakh on Friday.
Again on Saturday night, another gang of 10 robbers broke into the house of Mrinal Modak and Dulal Modak and escaped with Rs 50,000 cash and valuables worth Rs 5 lakh.
The group also injured Dulal and other members of the family, the source said.
A social activist of Hatsighimar, Safiqul Islam, said the villagers were living in fear. They realised that they were not safe though Kharuabandha police outpost is 100 metres from their villages, Panbari and Thanapara.
Hatsinghimari police station officer-in-charge Monoj Talukdar said they have arrested one of the robbers, identified as Sweet Ahmed of Sukchar area of the south Salmara-Mancachar subdivision, belonging to the gang which robbed Khandakar on Friday night. Talukdar said most of the robbers involved in the robbery have been identified. “We hope to arrest all of them soon,” he said.
