Sports centre on university radar

Ranchi University is all set to hit the tracks with the varsity planning to set up a Sports Development Centre of its own to hone budding talents.

Sources said the varsity had already started work in this regard by drafting and sending a proposal to the tune of Rs 20 lakh to Jharkhand sports department via state chief secretary S.K. Choudhary in the first week of March. They said that the proposal had got the nod from the authorities, clearing the decks for the construction work.

The centre will be kind of a sports clinic where the young talents will be taught the techniques of a game and given motivational classes as and when required. It will be open throughout the year.

“The proposal had been initially mooted by our head L.N. Bhagat during a meeting of all vice chancellors with Governor Syed Ahmed on February 26 this year. Chief secretary Choudhary, who was also present at the meeting, sounded excited at the idea and asked the varsity to forward a formal proposal to him. We took seven days to draft and send the proposal,” a senior varsity official said. He added that the chief secretary’s office in turn forwarded the plans to sports department, which in turn approved and released the funds.

Vice chancellor Bhagat said that though the money had been released, they were yet to receive it and could initiate construction work as soon as the funds reached them.

The basic idea of setting up such a structure exclusively dedicated to sports, Bhagat claimed, was to ensure total development of a student.

“Sports is as vital for students and a educational institution as academics. The centre will be a small effort from our side to create players who excel at the local and national level,” Bhagat said.

Incidentally, Ranchi University on Saturday had also inked an MoU with the Jharkhand Volleyball Association to promote the sport on its campus. The move Bhagat claimed, was the first major step towards creating an ambience suitable for sports in colleges registered under the varsity.

He added that while the varsity will provide space in the form of grounds for practise, the volleyball association would chip in with experienced coaches and exposure for the students as part of the deal.
