Ayushmann was Jaya Misra’s showstopper at The Oberoi Grand on Saturday. Pictures by Amit Datta

I want to play a superhero called Ayush Man and I will wear something quirky!” smiled Vicky Donor star Ayushmann Khurrana, in town on Saturday for two back-to-back events — one a campus do and another a fashion show. t2 caught up with him in the Vidya Mandir greenroom as he awaited his turn on the stage at the AIM 12 in association with TTIS and powered by t2.

A casual Ayushmann will be dressed in...

A jeans and a T-shirt for day-to-day life. I like wearing colourful watches. I have this bright red watch that I normally wear. And colourful shoes. I also mix and match shoelaces.

And when he is at a producer’s office...

It depends on who the producer is! If it’s someone like John (Abraham), I’ll be myself. If it is someone older, I’ll be less radical.

What would you wear on your first date?

I think, ideally, a guy should be himself on his first date. He should not try too hard. You cannot put on a façade for too long if you are looking for a long-term relationship. If you are looking for a fling, you can be a little flamboyant.

How has your personal fashion changed over the years?

I was in an all-boys school and college. So I was never fashion-conscious because there were no girls. I don’t remember looking at myself in the mirror when I was in school! Seriously! All-boys school mein kisko impress karoon? Maybe when I went to the university or for MTV Roadies, with exposure… I came out of Chandigarh… I have grown as a fashion person.

So you have developed a style sense?

Definitely! Since I was with the MTV brigade, fashion was one of the most important factors.… It was very important that a deejay should be fashion-conscious. It was a conscious effort in fact. I was from a small town and was quite conventional in my fashion. I have evolved, I think.

Was it through trial and error?

Of course. Since I am a lean guy, I don’t wear skinny T-shirts. I like experimenting with layers. So I’ll fold my shirt or team it with a tee. It’s very important that you know your body type.

You also like trying quirky things…

I do… in fact wearing colourful watches is very quirky! Even experimenting with your shoelaces and bright shoes is very quirky. I used to wear different-coloured specs and I was known for that! I used to mix and match the colour of my spectacles with the colour of my T-shirt.

Are you a shopaholic?

I am not! I don’t shop. I hate shopping. I go to shop with an agenda. If I go out to pick up a white shirt, I will pick up a white shirt. Normally, I just pick up clothes from my shoots! (Laughs)

A hero who’s a style icon for you?

Amitabh Bachchan. Always very stylish. Even now. Always ahead of his time.
