Women held for robbery

Two women were arrested on Sunday for allegedly robbing a house where they used to work as cooks. Amit Rakshit, a Serampore-based lawyer, lodged a complaint alleging that Shefali Maiti, 50, and Deepa Shaw, 48, had drugged his wife and decamped with jewellery worth around Rs 4 lakh. He said the two were introduced to their family by their former help Sabita. olice arrested Sabita, who allegedly told them that the duo had paid her to introduce them to the family. “Shefali used to run a robbery racket from her house at Daspara in Ultadanga and several women used to work under her,” said an officer.

Strike

The Bengal unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) will not participate in Monday’s nationwide doctors’ strike called by the parent body, said Santanu Sen, the secretary of IMA Bengal. He said the IMA state unit did not want patients to be affected by the strike, which has been called to protest the acceptance of National Council for Human Resource in Health Act and Clinical Establishment Rules by the Centre.

Burglary

Burglars broke into a house at Vidyasagar Pally in Keshtopur on Saturday night and decamped with ornaments and cash worth around Rs 1 lakh. House owner Ashis Sanyal was not home at the time.

Suicide

A 63-year-old trader was found hanging in his house on Lower Karaya Range Road in Tangra on Sunday. Police said Henry Yeah, who used to run a tannery, was suffering from depression. He was declared dead at National Medical College and Hospital.
