Youth shot, finger at Cong

Malda, June 21: A CPM worker was injured when three persons fired at him on NH34 near the Kaliachak block development office last evening. Party leaders have alleged that Congress-backed goons were behind the attack.

The incident took place in less than a month after another CPM activist was shot dead by alleged Congress supporters.

Around 6.30pm yesterday, three persons fired at 29-year-old Farooq Sheikh when he was returning home on a motorcycle. As the youth fell off the two-wheeler, the attackers, who were also on a motorbike, fled. Local people took Farooq to the Malda district hospital from where he was referred to Calcutta Medical College Hospital. Farooq, a resident of Balupur, around 30km from here, is a labour supplier.

District secretary of the CPM Ambar Mitra alleged that Congress-backed goons had been terrorising CPM workers for some time. “Our men have become too panicky to move around,” Mitra said.

Congress district president Abu Hashem Khan Chowdhury, however, denied the allegations. “The CPM has let loose terror. The law and order situation at Sujapur and Kaliachak has improved a lot compared to what it was during the Left Front rule,” he said.

District police chief Jayanta Pal said they were looking for the attackers. “Farooq’s family members have not lodged a police complaint yet.”
