Silchar, June 21: A top official of the Mizoram government resigned from the post of principal legal adviser to the state government yesterday after the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), a students’ body, demanded his removal.
Nearly 50 MZP members staged a demonstration in front of the office of P. Chakravarty, a former law secretary of the government, in Aizwal, against his re-appointment to the post of principal legal adviser to the Congress government for the fourth time.
Chakravarty had retired as the law secretary to the Mizoram government in 2011 following which the government appointed him as the state’s first ever principal legal adviser in the same year.
In November 2011, he was given a six-month extension as the principal legal official. The state government awarded him his third extension in April for a month.
However, when he was given another extension yesterday by a month, the MZP objected.
Police were sent to the Mizoram secretariat where the law department has its office. But they denied that the protesters damaged furniture in the office.
MZP executive member Crenthlei said Chakravarty was re-appointed in spite of the group’s stand that no Mizoram government official should be given any post after retirement.
